Are awards and prizes important to you? At school, I won the Maths prize. I’ve still got the prize book and it really matters to me.
I was about 12 when I programmed a ZX81 to produce an image of Marylin Monroe from zeroes and ones that morphed into an image of Humphrey Bogart. I entered it into the Art competition but won the Maths prize.
People were bewitched by the transition effect (it was the early 80s) and it was probably the start of my design career. Now I sit in front of an astronomically more powerful Mac on a daily basis.
I often think back to the impact of people engaging with the image and I’m always trying to recreate that magic. What’s your most valued prize or award?
