How clear are you on your vision?

How clear is your design partner on your vision?

Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting John Taylor from Duran Duran (80s new wave synth-pop futurists) at a retrospective of the design work created by the legendary designer, Malcolm Garrett.

(L) John Taylor (Duran Duran) (R) Nigel Davies (Adam Ant fan but I didn’t mention that)

From the early days, the band and designers crafted a visual identity inspired by a futuristic airline—an idea they treated like a serious branding project. It was fascinating to hear John (himself a graphic designer) talk about the close collaboration with designers who approached the band like a corporate client. The result was a visual language and style so distinctive that it's become a shorthand for the 1980s itself.

I occasionally hear business owners say things like, “I worked with a designer, but they just didn’t understand,” or “They provided me with a few options that all appeared the same.” Results you’re dissatisfied with, have paid for, and don’t know how to proceed.

You’re building a loyal fanbase.

You need to find your Durannies.

You may not be travelling around on yachts, hanging out with supermodels or bleaching your hair. And yes, sometimes it might feel like there’s “no sign of life” when it comes to your brand’s direction. But with a clear vision—interpreted by your design partners in close collaboration—you might well be on your way.

Enjoy your Quick PINT
