I buy records. Regularly, most weeks in fact.

This week it was the new Brandon Flowers album (he's gone country) and Phoebe Bridgers' Lost Weekend, likely to be album of the year with most critics.

Here's the thing though: I didn't listen to either album first, or even any of the tracks. I rarely listen before I buy.

But I read the articles, the reviews, catch the clips on social. If something interests me, I invest in it.

We do the same with most things we buy. We research. We listen to recommendations. We spend time deciding where to spend our money. Not just on the big things, houses and cars, but the smaller things too. Air fryers. New shoes. Records.

As business owners though, we can be far less discerning when we're selling.

We're often happy enough just to make the sale, without asking if it's the right sale. We say yes to what comes our way. We rarely apply the same judgement to what we sell as we do to what we buy.

Being busy doesn't mean being profitable. And delivering work just because it's there doesn't mean we'll do our best work.

So what makes a good sale?

You enjoy doing the work.
You have time to do it properly.
They value what you bring, not just what you deliver.

Get those three right and the work isn't just more valuable, it's more profitable. You build relationships that lead to referrals. You grow a portfolio you're proud of.

I might have got it wrong with Brandon Flowers going country. It is unlikely to be full of wedding disco bangers.\*

But that's OK. A good decision doesn't need to be a safe one. Just one worth saying yes to. Maybe it was a good buy not just a good sale.

Enjoy your Quick PINT
