# Do I need a personal brand?

"Do I need a personal brand?"

A lot of people ask me that.  
Not many like the answer I give them.  
And that answer is no.

You don't need a personal brand.  
You are a person. You have personality.  
People like your personality.  
Well, maybe some don't. But that's fine.

Not being liked can actually be a positive. It gets rid of people you wouldn't like anyway.

So what are they really asking?

They're asking for permission to be more human in their business. To have some fun. To let their hair down. To be themselves. And that I can totally get behind.

But you don't need a fake signature scrawl or a White Company themed photoshoot. You need to express yourself. Maybe not the Monday morning 7am version.

People buy people. And that's true for businesses and brands.  
Just be who you are. No one else can be you.  
And that's why you stand out.  
That's your brand.

Now here's a question I get asked just as often  
  
"Should I use a personal name or a corporate name for my business?"

This time there's no definitive answer. It depends.

A personal name, if it's unique enough, will push you front and centre of the business. Good for visibility. Not so good for long term if you're building a team or an empire.

A corporate name makes the business the centre of attention. Less good for visibility, but it lets the business grow beyond you.

One is about personal identity. The other is about business identity.
